Suzuki Motorcycles

As a manufacture of motorcycles Suzuki got its start back in 1952. In the beginning Suzuki got its start by putting engines on bicycles. All through the 50s to the 70s the company manufactured primarily 2 stroke engines for its motorcycles. The larger of the two stroke engines came out in the 70s with the water cooled three cylinders of the GT750. The first two stroke I ever saw that ran cool and was reliable and long lasting.

One reason said to be a factor of Suzuki’s success story with the two-stroke engines had to do with Ernst Degner. Degner was a German that raced in the Grand Prix. He had defected to the West back in 61 but not without his expertise with two-stroke engines gained from MZ one of the German manufactures. Thanks to Degner Suzuki won the 50 cc class road racing World Championship in 1962. They were really glad they gave him a job after his defection from Germany.

The Japanese company went on to become the winner of the motocross Word Championship in 1970. A motocross racer by the name of Joel Robert took the title for the 250 cc class in 1970. Suzuki went on the gain respect by establishing a high place in the motorcycle racing industry. Later Barry Sheene and Roger De Coster won World Championship races in the 500 cc class for the road racing and motocross.

Suzuki moved into the four stroke engine market in 1976. Their first four stroke engines came out with the introduction of the GS400 and GS750 motorcycles.

Suzuki competition continues today one of the big titles was the big win of the MotoGP last won in the year 2000. Going back to 2006 the Suzuki MotoGP team is sponsored by Rizla.
