Motorcycle Helmets

Flip up motorcycle helmets are similar to full face helmets in that they have a face shield and come with accessories as well. The major difference is that as the name implies, the rider can flip up the face shield for more ventilation and to drink or eat without removing the helmet.

Open face motorcycle helmets offer less protection for the face than full face helmets. The rider has a less restricted view as well. This type of helmet has a large flip up or detachable face shield that does not enclose the bottom of the helmet like a full face helmet. This allows more airflow around the rider's face.

The least protective type of motorcycle helmets is the half shell helmet. Also referred to as the beanie helmet, this style basically sits on the rider's cranium and covers up to the upper half of the head without blocking the ears. They are usually lightweight and have little wind resistance. Riders who will only wear helmets when required to do so by law typically select the half shell helmet as it is the least restrictive in terms of wear ability.

Motorcycle helmets come in a huge variety of styles that bikers can choose from to match their riding needs and for the levels of protection and comfort they desire. It should come as no surprise that the more expensive higher end helmets such as full face helmets offer the most protection and can be tailored to provide greater rider comfort. Regardless of cost and style, every helmet made for the US market must comply with minimum standards set by the Department of Transportation.
